Sun Microsystems capped off a rough week by announcing it would layoff 5,000 to 6,000 employees or about 18% of its workforce.

Sun is not alone. Tech job layoffs have surged as the economic outlook has become bleaker. Through October 31, businesses in computer, electronics and telecommunication industries have cut more than 14,000 jobs this year.

The number of tech job layoffs already surpasses the total for all of 2007 and 2006. The layoffs are not close to what took place in 2001. The tech sector cut 695,581 jobs.

Two-thirds of the job layoffs, about 89,000 have taken place since July. So the trend is not good. There are plenty of signs that the economic slump is just starting the tech sector in earnest. Intel, for example, cut its revenue forecast by 10%.
